Is Your Social Media Holding Back Your Career?

Let’s be honest, we all forget just how public social media can be. As someone who’s looking for employment, you definitely want to be careful of what you post because employers will search for you online. Join me on a journey while we explore some important tips for social media.

1. Know the difference between “your” and “you’re”

Poor grammar is the easiest thing to be judged on, especially on social media. You’re not alone if you struggle with grammar. Search online for websites that will explain grammar rules in an easy way. This is especially important for your Linkedin profile.

2. Check privacy setting regularly

Privacy options change from time to time so it’s a good idea to regularly check your settings. These will affect who sees your posts so you might want to make your profiles private if you post content that isn’t work appropriate. If you’re not sure, Google yourself and see what turns up.

3. A picture speaks a thousand words. What does yours say?

Remember that pictures are an easy way to get information about someone. If you want to make your profile more employer friendly, try making your main picture one with a big cheesy smile. Headshots are preferred and try to avoid selfies, group pictures or pictures from nights out.

4. Think about who can see your profile when you post

When you decide to retweet, post or like something on social media, think about who you want to see your activity. You can target your content specifically to your audience.

5. Show the awesome sides of your personality!!

I know you’re awesome. You know you’re awesome. Use social media to showcase achievements, interests and hobbies that make you stand out from the rest. For example, I love to cook so my Instagram page features a lot of my recipes (and some pretty on fleek selfies). I also share work-related interests and articles to attract employers further.

As millennials, we have a huge advantage when it comes to social media because we’ve grown up using it. It only makes sense to use this advantage to help us in our careers too. These tips will make your digital presence more appropriate for work and might even help you with your career. Have a look through all your social media profiles and see how many of these tips you could use…
